Home Is Where The Art Is: Bespoke Artisan Finishes in a Century-Old Farmhouse

Arteriors blog home is where the art is

For designers and architects seeking ways to create authentic, emotionally resonant spaces, handcrafted surfaces are beautiful alternatives to manufactured materials: a sense of history, artistry, and place. Homes that celebrate the maker's hand possess a rare and enduring appeal.
Our circa 1910 farmhouse exemplifies this philosophy. Set within a wooded New England forest of Oak, Maple and Beech the property first captivated us because of its woodland setting. The house itself, however, was a cautionary tale of deferred maintenance and questionable renovations. Yet what we saw was a rustic treasure waiting to re-emerge.
Over the past twenty-five years, the home has evolved into a living portfolio of artisanal craftsmanship. Through layered decorative finishes, hand-applied materials, original artwork, and collected objects, it has become a testament to the enduring value of traditional craft re-imagined for contemporary living.

A Century-Old Farmhouse Re-imagined Through Artisan Finishes

Why Layered, Hand-Applied Finishes Work So Well for Older Homes

Historic homes naturally lend themselves to handcrafted surfaces. Their architectural details, irregularities, and accumulated history provide an ideal canvas for artisan wall finishes that celebrate rather than conceal the passage of time.
Older homes invite texture, patina, and visual depth. Layered, organic finishes such as lime wash, Roman Clay, decorative plaster, and Tadelakt compliment the honest construction of the house  creating integral, authentic surfaces that evolve over time.
These finishes bring a sense of permanence and craftsmanship that align beautifully with historic architectural details while satisfying contemporary desires for sustainability, wellness, and material authenticity.

How the Renovation Blends Craftsmanship, Art, and Collected Character

From the beginning, our goal was not restoration in the strictest sense, but rather the creation of a home that reflected both its architectural heritage and our lives as artists.
The original oak kitchen floor became a canvas for a hand-painted quilt pattern rendered in vibrant shades of grass green, curry yellow, acorn squash, and chalk blue. The design celebrates American folk-art traditions while transforming a utilitarian surface into a work of art.

Throughout the home, decorative elements reference the surrounding landscape. Hand-stenciled golden acorns adorn the living room walls, drawing inspiration from the abundance of oak trees outside. Combined with faux-bois, trompe l'oeil beams overhead, the room establishes a unified architectural narrative that honors both craftsmanship and regional character.

The Signature Finishes Featured Throughout the Home

Tadelakt Plaster

Ancient materials continue to resonate in contemporary design because they offer sensory richness and visual depth. Among the most compelling examples is Tadelakt, the traditional Moroccan lime plaster finish prized for its seamless appearance, organic sealers and leather-like surface.
Applied by hand and polished to a soft luster, Tadelakt introduces a sculptural quality to walls and architectural surfaces. The material's organic character allows it to interact beautifully with changing natural light, creating interiors that feel both timeless and deeply connected to nature.
In select areas, Tadelakt plaster contributes a tactile luxury that feels entirely appropriate within a historic farmhouse setting. Its handcrafted appearance reinforces the home's commitment to authenticity while offering designers a compelling alternative to conventional wall treatments.

Lime Wash

Lime wash continues to attract architects and interior designers for its ability to create nuanced, luminous surfaces.
Unlike conventional coatings, lime wash contains mineral pigments that produce subtle tonal variation and movement across walls. The finish feels alive, responding to changing levels of humidity, preventing mold and mildew in humid environments and enhancing the natural architecture of a space.
Throughout the farmhouse, lime wash, clay and Venetian plaster walls introduce softness and depth while reinforcing a strong connection to natural materials. Their velvety appearance supports the home's biophilic design principles, creating environments that feel calm and grounded.
The beauty of lime wash lies in its imperfection. Gentle variation and visible brush movement celebrate craftsmanship rather than conceal it, resulting in surfaces that possess character and authenticity.

Roman Clay

Roman Clay offers another interpretation of lime-based wall finishes. With its smooth, softly burnished appearance, Roman Clay creates a refined surface that is both rustic and sophisticated.
Roman Clay contributes visual warmth while maintaining a quiet restraint. Its subtle texture complements both antique furnishings and contemporary elements, demonstrating why the finish has become increasingly popular in high-end residential and hospitality projects.
Together with lime wash paint and other handcrafted and organic materials, Roman Clay reinforces the natural material aesthetic that defines the home's character.

Decorative Painting, Faux Woodgrain, and Custom Stencil Work

Decorative painting remains one of the most versatile tools available to designers seeking bespoke expression.
In the living room, a faux woodgrain beam, executed in traditional faux-bois techniques celebrates historic craftsmanship while strengthening the architectural framework of the space. The convincing timber appearance adds a cost-effective alternative to re-claimed wood beams.

Elsewhere, a custom stencil inspired by nineteenth-century cameo silhouettes transforms the powder room into an unexpected jewel box. Set against a larger damask-inspired background pattern, the layered design introduces whimsy, artistry, and historical reference to quaint antique wallpaper patterns used in 19th century New England homes.
These custom wall finishes demonstrate how hand-painted artistry can support a joyfully eclectic interior design.

How These Finishes Add Character to a Historic Home

Blending Old and New Through Material Choice, Finish Texture, and Visual History

One of the greatest challenges facing designers working with historic properties is balancing preservation with contemporary living.
The solution often lies in material selection. Handcrafted finishes naturally bridge past and present because they draw upon centuries-old traditions while remaining relevant to modern aesthetics. Whether through lime wash, Tadelakt, Venetian plaster, or decorative paint finishes, these surfaces introduce depth and imperfect perfection, something that newer materials often struggle to achieve.
Their layered textures create visual history, allowing spaces to feel accumulated rather than decorated.

Beyond the Walls: Fine Art, Vintage Objects, and Collected Details

How Original Fine Art Paintings Contribute to the Home's Aesthetic

As an artist-owned home, original artwork forms an essential part of the design narrative. Paintings are integral design elements that shape color palettes, tell stories, and establish focal points throughout the house.

The Role of Antique and Vintage Object D'Art

Antique silver, vintage porcelain, found objects, and collected curiosities contribute additional layers of meaning. These pieces bring history, both personal and cultural, into daily life while creating moments of discovery throughout the interior.
Unlike newly purchased décor, objects with age and provenance introduce narrative richness. We honor the past with our curiosity-cabinet style interior. Existing materials are celebrated, adapted, and given new purpose rather than discarded. This approach not only reduces waste but also results in interiors that feel genuinely personal and deeply rooted in experience.
By re-using, re-purposing and recycling, we are aligning our intention of stewardship and craftsmanship for the next one-hundred years.

Why Designers and Homeowners Are Drawn to Bespoke Interiors

How Layered Finishes Create a Home That Feels Lived In and Curated

The growing interest in bespoke interiors reflects a broader cultural desire for authenticity. Designers and homeowners alike are seeking environments that feel meaningful rather than formulaic.
Layered artisan finishes provide a powerful way to achieve this goal. Through Tadelakt, lime wash, Roman Clay, decorative painting, and other handcrafted techniques, spaces acquire a unique and layered richness.
Our farmhouse stands as an example of how traditional craftsmanship can remain relevant in contemporary design. Every hand-painted floor, burnished plaster wall, stenciled motif, and collected object contributes to a larger story, one rooted in artistry, history, and personal expression.
An artist's home is lived in, worked in, and dreamed in. It reveals the maker's hand at every turn. Preservation of traditional craft and its reinvention for modern life remains our legacy. Rich, unapologetic color anchors it all, narrating the artful vibrancy of lives immersed in the visual arts and proving that home, at its best, is where the art truly is.
