One of our favorite approaches involves combining plaster with carefully layered painted reveals. Instead of allowing the plaster to remain the sole visual element, we intentionally expose underlying colors, metallic accents, or decorative painting techniques beneath the surface.
The result creates extraordinary dimension, elevating ordinary textured plaster walls into artistic focal points.
Custom Troweled Plaster with Patina Glazes
At Arteriors, we are known for our artisanal hospitality finishes. For Sousa Design Architects, we created this faux weathered, hand troweled stucco finish using a combination of plasters and a patina wash to evoke an old-world Japan setting. A carefully developed patina glaze introduces another level of complexity.
Soft washes of color settle into the plaster's natural texture, creating surfaces that appear weathered by time rather than recently installed. These layered effects bring warmth, subtle movement, and visual depth that simply cannot be achieved with paint or plaster alone.

In restaurants such as Josephine in Somerville and Nomai, formerly in Hingham, a combination of varying plasters with contrasting porosity is used to signal a history or storied effect.
Our proprietary finish, Meteorite Shower, is a finish that we adapted for The Row Hotel in Somerville, MA to reflect the location’s automotive history. It combines movement, texture, sheen variations and metallic luminosity in unexpected ways. Originally developed through artistic exploration, we customize this finish to suit dramatic residential interiors, luxury hospitality environments, and commercial spaces.

Why Sample Boards Matter More Than Digital Swatches
One of the greatest misconceptions in decorative finishes is believing a computer screen accurately represents the final installation.
It doesn't.
Designers should never have to rely solely on manufacturer’s photography or digital renderings when specifying artisanal finishes.
Custom sample boards are invaluable because they demonstrate how the finish feels and reacts to different lighting. Burnishing, layering, and tool selection all influence the final appearance.
Adjustments can be made to texture, pigment concentration, movement, and finish before work begins on-site. These accurate samples of the actual mineral tinted lime plaster on a board becomes a collaborative design tool. They can be taken to the job-site, shown to clients, discussed, tested, etc., not simply shown as the product appears in a brochure or on a computer screen.
This process leads to better communication and solutions, sometimes more appropriate than the original concept.
