Mist Over Bay State Woodlands: A Custom Panoramic Wall Mural for a Historic New England Farmhouse
The mist on the pond outside our home the last few mornings has us revisiting one of our favorite projects. Here’s a refreshed blog with a few new thoughts, enjoy!
For a mid-19th-century farmhouse in Dover, Massachusetts, we created Mist Over Bay State Woodlands, a hand-painted panoramic wall mural that transforms a kitchen into an immersive landscape.

Inspiration: Romanticism Meets New England Heritage
The 825-square-foot custom mural was designed to invite a moody and timeless beauty of New England woodlands indoors. The project began with a conversation and a single image. Our clients shared a print that evoked the hushed atmosphere of the banks of a fog-bound river. Its mood recalled the expressive brushwork of Turner, Delacroix, and Blake—artists whose sketches capture the sublime drama of weather and atmosphere. We were equally reminded of French and English scenic wallpapers, with their sweeping panoramas and sense of place.
In translating those inspirations into a mural, we imagined a vernacular version—a landscape rooted in the textures and tones of Massachusetts, with woodland vistas unfolding across the kitchen walls for a domestic set design.
Crafting the Mural: Traditional Techniques, Contemporary Vision
Creating a panoramic mural at this scale requires both precision and poetry. Our team began with eight to-scale “cartoons” on gridded drafting paper, laying out the composition in careful detail. From there, the challenge was to make house paint behave like watercolor.
We manipulated pigments with large brushes, creating sweeping transparent layers for sky and background. Onto these, we overlaid trees, rocks, and wildlife using a subtractive technique—softening shapes and blurring edges until the landscape dissolved into mist. Additional details were painted in increasingly opaque tones, keeping true to a monochromatic grey-green palette that mirrors the colors of the region’s forests on a rain-washed morning.
Transforming New Cabinetry With Weather-Worn Appeal
To complete the vision, the kitchen cabinetry received an intentionally weathered patina finish, echoing the mural’s rustic elegance and grounding the room in harmony with the home’s farmhouse heritage.

A Dialogue with History
Like the Romantics who found divinity in nature, or the Hudson River School painters who idealized the American landscape, we seek to capture not only what is seen but what is felt. Decorative arts traditions also guided our process, connecting past craftsmanship with contemporary interiors. The result is a mural that feels timeless: a scenic backdrop, evocative of place.

2025 Trends: Panoramic Murals as Immersive Interiors
In interior design, murals are stepping beyond ornament to become immersive environments. For 2025 and beyond, panoramic wall murals, particularly those inspired by nature, are forecast to be a defining trend. Designers and homeowners alike are commissioning large-scale, bespoke wall art, functioning as interior experiences rather than functional space.
Misty woodland palettes, atmospheric grays, and earth-inspired greens are resonating with the growing movement toward biophilic design and eco-luxury. Unlike digital prints, hand-painted murals bring depth, authenticity, and tactile craftsmanship that resonate deeply with a call for integral finishes and artisan made imagery. In this way, Mist Over Bay State Woodlands anticipates a design future where custom wall art serves not just as decoration, but as a relatable landscape within the home.

Conclusion: Living Inside the Landscape
Mist Over Bay State Woodlands is a lived-in painting, a daily reminder of the beauty and mystery of New England’s wooded landscapes. By merging historic inspiration with artisanal technique, we created an environment that reflects our clients’ love of nature and heritage with bespoke wall finishes.
